Joint M.S./M.B.A. Program
This joint program enables students to obtain both an M.B.A. and an M.S. in Agricultural and Resource Economics in two years.
The joint degree requires a total 82 units of course work, including the program cores for the M.S. in Agricultural and Resource Economics and the M.B.A., with additional units selected from offerings of elective upper-division or graduate courses offered by the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics or the Graduate School of Management.
Specific ARE Requirements
The joint degree requires students essentially to complete the requirements for the ARE Plan II MS degree, with some minor variations in options for electives. Specifically, students are required to take 36 units of coursework in agricultural and resource economics, including
- the core requirements in microeconomic theory and applications (ARE 204A, ARE 204B, ARE 258), econometrics (ARE 256), and mathematical programming (ARE 252)
- two of the three restricted elective courses (ARE 214, ARE 222, and ARE 275)
- elective courses, which may include courses offered by GSM, in addition to the courses that may be taken as electives by M.S. students, including other graduate courses or upper-division undergraduate courses (Allowable upper-division courses do not include core undergraduate courses, e.g., ARE 100A-B, 106, 155 or their prerequisites.)
Up to six units of courses in other disciplines may be included in the program, and up to 12 units may be counted toward both the specific M.S. requirements and the M.B.A. requirements.
In addition, students must pass the M.S. Plan II written comprehensive exam, which follows the completion of all course work specific to the M.S. requirements.
Specific GSM Requirements
The M.B.A. core requires 27 units of coursework (9 courses).
- In the first two quarters of the M.B.A. program, students take six required core classes in accounting (MGT 200A), economics (MGT 202A), finance (MGT 205), marketing (MGT 204), organizational behavior (MGT 201A), and statistics (MGT 203A).
- To round out the core, students choose three out of the following seven breadth courses: accounting (MGT 200B), economics (MGT 202B), organizational behavior (MGT 201B), statistics (MGT 203B), information technology (MGT 207), and management science (MGT 206, 252).
Admission
Students must meet the admission requirements of both the Graduate School of Management and the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, and be accepted jointly to both programs. Students must apply to each program separately (although indicating that they are applying for the joint program).
Entrance to the joint M.S./M.B.A. program is contingent upon the applicant’s acceptance to each individual program. The examination scores from the GRE and/or GMAT may be required. Please contact each program for clarification about its test requirements.
