Instructions

The following spreadsheets calculate the value of a single tree or vine lost to any cause then replanted and grown to maturity or to the age at which it was lost, whichever occurs first.

Assumptions

A single tree or vine in an orchard or vineyard is lost and removed in the summer before harvest, but too late to replant that year (year 0), and is replanted the following year (year 1). Compensation for the loss is discounted since the grower is receiving income now that would not have been received until the future. The worksheet calculates the annual losses over the years until the tree/vine reaches the age of the tree/vine at the time of the loss or until mature production is reached and then discounts the value of those losses. Costs for damage to investments such as irrigation systems or trellis systems are not included in this calculation and should be determined separately.

Data Entry and Printing

Data may only be entered into the yellow shaded cells in the General Data Input section. The spreadsheet is not password protected and should not be modified. The spreadsheet will automatically recalculate the net present value whenever new data is entered. Cells with zeros (0) in them will appear as blanks. The tree/vine spacing is not known or is on a non-square pattern, then the number of trees/vines per acre may be entered in the cell (I12) to the right of the cells for tree/vine spacing. The Net Present Value of Loss is the worth of the tree/vine and appears in the blue shaded cell (E52). A default print page range is set in the spreadsheet so that the general input and cost sections will print when the print button is pressed.
